Vision problems are common as people get older. Proper eye care can prevent or mitigate some of them, while others require proper care from an eye doctor. In observance of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Healthy Aging Month in September, here are some tips to follow for aging vision.

How to Care for Aging Eyes

1. Schedule Regular Eye Exams

If you don't already see an eye doctor once a year, you should start after turning 40. Many people don't realize they need prescription glasses or contacts until their vision has deteriorated significantly.

Until then, they risk straining their eyes. An ophthalmologist can also check for common eye problems related to aging, such as glaucoma and cataracts. Early detection may slow down these conditions.

2. Wear Sunglasses

The sun's ultraviolet light can harm your eyes just as much as your skin. UV rays can cause corneal damage and macular degeneration, which may lead to severe vision loss. They can also hasten the formation of cataracts and eye cancers.

Additionally, the skin around eyes is thin and delicate. Prolonged sun exposure is likely to result in dryness, wrinkles and sagging, which tend to make you look older. Wearing UV-filtrating sunglasses is more important than ever in later years.

3. Eat a Healthy Diet

Maintaining healthy eyes begins in the stomach. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables will deliver all the nutrients your eyes need as they age. Research has shown that foods rich in certain nutrients can reduce the risk of serious eye disease.

Dark leafy greens contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, while oranges, tomatoes, strawberries and bell peppers provide strong doses of vitamin C. And you may know about the positive effects of beta carotene, found in carrots and sweet potatoes, on eye health.
