One of the best ways to keep staffers happy is to provide them with opportunities to grow within the company. Full Throttle Indoor Karting in Cincinnati, OH, takes on the mission each day by providing a number of employee development incentives to recruit and retain the best and the brightest staff members. As winners of Cincy Magazine’s Best Team Building activity in their annual  “Best of the North Competition,” the owners of this go-karting facility understand how having a strong team of employees is connected to excellent customer service and repeat business.

Full Throttle Indoor Karting offers several ways to build those connections. The process that Full Throttle Indoor Karting built started with identifying what a good employee looks like.  “For one, we always look for new hires to be enthusiastic and be able to hold a good conversation during the interview.  They don’t need to have a lot of job experience, but they do need to be personable and willing to work hard” says Aaron Hirsch, General Manager.

Next, the management team needed to determine the best way to train and retain employees. “We try to get new crew members trained up in several areas of the operation in their first few weeks. That helps give them the confidence by having a solid understanding of what’s going on everywhere in the facility early on,” says Chelsea Willams, Assistant Manager. “This helps the crew members feel comfortable answering questions and helping our guests with things beyond just their assigned area. Once they start mastering one area we cross train them in other areas. By doing this we allow them to find other areas of the business they might enjoy working in, and identify new skills.”

General Manager Aaron Hirsch, only 26-years-old, came to them on the ground floor and now runs the entire facility. Assistant Manager Chelsea Williams, imagecame to Full Throttle as a shy high school student and demonstrated a willingness to learn all she could and continue to do more. In just a short time, she has grown tremendously, and has demonstrated great organizational and leadership skills. She coordinates all the purchasing for the company, handles all employee training, as well handling all the scheduling details of corporate events. Full Throttle just hosted a Junior Achievement event with 50 8th graders focusing on the skills necessary for their first job. When Chelsea was asked if she would lead the talk, she said yes without hesitation!

Whether it’s arranging a go-kart birthday party or a company-sponsored group go-karting outing, the management team provides new employees at Full Throttle Indoor Karting with important tasks. Aaron Banfield, one of the owners, explains “We’ve found that training the crew in a wide variety of skills help us a lot. If we are short staffed in one area, we can easily shift staff around, and the customer still receives the exceptional experience. In addition, we have found that for our more professional roles we’ve had much better luck developing and promoting from within,” Aaron Hirsch and Chelsea Williams are great examples of this.

Full Throttle Indoor Karting’s owners, managers, staff, and mechanics work together like family providing exciting and memorable visits to every customer who walks through the door. This team of go-getters took an opportunity and turned it into a positive experience.
