Mulch is among the most useful resources for any gardener. It allows you to insulate desired plants, keep down weeds, and add color and contrast to a landscape. To maximize these benefits and extend the material’s life span for as long as possible, keep these three tips in mind.

3 Ways to Get More Life Out of Your Mulch

1. Make the Size Uniform

Buying a quality product makes a huge difference in both function and longevity. In particular, look for woodchips that are all roughly the same size. This will help prevent smaller particles from slipping down to create an uneven layer or larger particles from staying on the surface and blowing away. When they’re all of a uniform size, they’ll be more likely to lock together and create a woven layer with maximum staying power.

2. Create Sufficient Depth

Depth is an important consideration when first preparing an area for mulch. For maximum benefit, the layers should be between 2 and 4 inches deep with perhaps three layers of woodchips. This is deep enough to prevent sunlight from reaching weeds but shallow enough that you won’t smother the roots of desirable plants or keep water from reaching them.

3. Refresh Faded Material

mulchOne of the main benefits of spreading woodchips over a landscaping area is its color. It helps to liven up a garden by creating a vibrant, visual focal point, adding beauty and design while helping to establish clear boundaries between the different areas. Woodchips don’t maintain their color forever, though. When you notice them start to become gray and faded, this is a sign that the dye is washing out. Luckily, you don’t have to replace all the woodchips—only those on the surface. Rake the topmost layer away, then add new, colorful chips in order to refresh the material’s appearance, thus extending the usefulness of the mulch layers underneath.
