Chicken coop bedding, or litter, provides a secure foundation for sleeping. The material that’s used is important, however, as moisture, odor, and bug control need to be taken into consideration. Out of all the different types of litter, wood shavings are the only choice that supplies all these benefits for the owner and their chickens. Here’s a closer look at why they’re the best option for chicken bedding.

Type of Wood & Cut

Pine shavings are one of the top recommended bedding materials for chickens. Avoid cedar shavings; the odor is too strong for the birds’ respiratory systems. Larger flaked wood shavings are preferred because they create less dust than smaller flakes and are easier to clean. Dust is necessary for the birds to bathe with, however. It acts as an abrasive in the feathers and, combined with their natural oils, helps them stay clean. More importantly, it prevents mites and other insects from bothering them. Pine shavings dry fast while inhibiting mold growth, and the material absorbs moisture well enough to capture odors.

Fresh & Clean Care

You can usually tell how bad it is by the smell. As long as the pine smell is still present, you’re usually good to go. You can add some fresh shavings and replace it with the dried-out version later. You want at least a 2-inch layer of shavings, but 4 to 6 inches will last longer. Once the litter is no longer usable, you can add it directly to your compost pile.
