Diabetes can cause a number of symptoms that affect different parts of the body. Patients are especially susceptible to developing foot problems due to nerve damage, a common effect that results from elevated blood sugar levels. Known as diabetic neuropathy, damage to the nerves can cause discomfort and even affect your quality of life. Here is what you should know.

What Is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Because neuropathy occurs as a result of increased blood sugar, it usually takes some time to develop. You won’t notice the symptoms right away, but as the damage sets in, you might experience issues like pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness. As the problem worsens, you might lose sensation in your feet. That can be problematic, as you may not be able to detect if you get a cut or a blister. Without sensation, those wounds could become infected. Because the blood vessels in the feet can also weaken due to nerve damage, the infected spots may not heal properly. Eventually, this could lead to more significant and serious problems, like gangrene.

What Are the Risk Factors?

If you experience elevated blood sugar levels over an extended period of time, you may be at increased risk of developing diabetic neuropathy. There are other risk factors that could increase the likelihood, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and damage to your blood vessels due to chronically high blood cholesterol. Sometimes, people whose vitamin B-12 levels are low may also develop neuropathy. Some medications for diabetes may even bring those levels down, which is why it’s important to speak to your doctor about monitoring your blood.

How Can You Prevent It?

The best way to avoid this type of nerve damage is to manage your diet as closely as possible. Eat a diet that is recommended by your doctor, keep a close eye on your blood glucose levels, and take all of your prescribed medications at the right time every day. Make sure you get plenty of exercise, too, as engaging in regular activity can help you better manage your blood sugar levels.
