Brushing your teeth twice a day is an essential part of any dental care routine. However, even the most diligent brushers may be making mistakes that can detract from their oral health. The following guide outlines more about a few of these teeth cleaning missteps and how to correct them to create better habits.

What Are Some Bad Oral Care Habits You Should Correct?

1. Not Brushing Long Enough

You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day. Brushing for less than two minutes can leave plaque and bacteria on your teeth, which can cause cavities and gum disease.

Divide your mouth into four sections and spend 30 seconds brushing each section. Use gentle circular motions, and make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces.

2. Utilizing Improper Brushing Techniques

Many people brush their teeth too hard, which can damage the enamel on their teeth and cause gum recession. Others brush their teeth in a back-and-forth motion, which can cause toothbrush abrasion and damage the gums.

Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth and use gentle circular motions. Make sure to brush your teeth and gums, but don't apply too much pressure.

3. Never Changing Brushes

Over time, the bristles on your toothbrush become frayed and less effective at removing plaque and bacteria. Using an old toothbrush can also introduce bacteria into your mouth, leading to infections.

Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles become frayed. Make sure to rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after each use and store it in an upright position to allow it to air dry.

4. Skipping Flossing

Flossing is an essential part of dental care, but many people skip it or don't do it correctly. Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gum line, where your toothbrush can't reach.

To correctly floss your teeth, use a piece of floss about 18 inches long. Wrap the floss around your fingers and gently slide it between your teeth, making sure to wrap it around each tooth in a C-shape.
