Anchorage-based companies must comply with the city’s municipal codes to ensure their sites are equipped to handle fires. New codes were recently put into effect, and they may impact your company’s fire protection system. If you’ve recently changed your system or are planning updates, here's what to consider.

Permitting Requirements for System Changes & Demolitions

Any changes to your gas detection, energy, life safety, or access control systems now require a permit. These alterations may include rebuilding or replacement of components, system expansions, and modifications to the detection coverage ranges. You’ll also need to acquire a special permit for the demolition or partial removal of any life safety or fire protection system.

Retrofit Permits

Businesses that are planning to retrofit existing fire protection systems, including alarms and sprinklers, will need to acquire retrofit permits. Applicable actions include adding or relocating sprinkler heads and replacing sprinkler system piping. You'll also need to submit an installer’s certification letter, a diagram and written description of the changes, and a statement verifying everything complies with local codes.

The design and installation of the modifications must be overseen by a professional with a level C State of Alaska fire systems permit and installed by someone holding a level B or C permit. A final inspection must be completed within 30 days of the modifications.

Fire Systems That Don't Require Permits

Under the new codes, like-for-like changes of fire systems that don’t exceed 20% of the devices or equipment per floor or system don't require a permit. However, the design and installation must still be overseen by a professional with a level C permit and installed by someone holding a level B or C permit. The same requirements as the retrofit changes apply.

An exception is if sprinkler head additions are being made, in which case, the changes must be documented by a level IIB or IIC permit holder. The additions are to be completed per pipe schedule and may not exceed the system’s limitations; this should also be indicated on the original plans for the sprinkler system.
