Being pregnant doesn’t mean that you have to stop your workouts at the gym. Prioritizing physical fitness while you’re pregnant helps you handle the ways that your body is changing. It’s also easier to recover and lose weight afterward. Below are the workouts that will benefit you most at this time.

How to Exercise During Pregnancy

1. Weight Lifting

Stronger muscles can better deal with the extra weight that comes with pregnancy, as well as labor. Stick with weight machines, as they control your movements better than free weights, reducing the likelihood of injury. Avoid holding weights over your belly or on your back. Also, keep the weight low and reps high, such as 12 to 15 per set, and consistently breathe so that you don’t get lightheaded.

2. Indoor Cycling

Since it requires little to no impact on your joints, indoor cycling is a fantastic workout option. It’s best if you’ve already been doing it for at least six months before getting pregnant. However, even if you’re new, going slowly and with little resistance can still help you stay fit. Be careful not to lean back on the bike, though, as this could hurt your back.

3. Stair Climbers & Ellipticals

workoutIf you want resistance training with minimal joint impact, choose stair climbers and ellipticals. You can adjust the incline and speed to your comfort level, but even basic settings give you an excellent workout. Most machines come with handlebars, too, so you can keep yourself from losing balance.

4. Running

Experienced runners can continue with their regimen, but if you are a beginner, wait until after the baby. Your growing belly will add weight and throw off your center of gravity, so even veterans should go a little slower and stay on flat ground, which is easily controllable with a treadmill.

5. Walking

If none of these exercises sound particularly appealing or feel too strenuous for you while pregnant, walking is recommended. It still keeps your heart rate up and your muscles strong and flexible. Get on a treadmill, and let yourself move at a comfortable pace.
