Cats get a bad rap for being unaffectionate, and it’s often because many pet owners don’t understand their cues. They can be extremely affectionate and show it in several unique ways. Whether you’re coming home after a long day or relaxing on the couch with your cat, pet care experts recommend looking for the following signs that your cat loves you.

How to Tell Your Cat Loves You

1. Purring

Cats purr by using their larynx and diaphragm muscles as they inhale and exhale. Pet care experts haven’t quite figured out why they make this sound, but it’s often seen as a quintessential sign of happiness; although, they may also make this sound if they’re hungry.

You can respond to your cat purring by showing them plenty of affection. You can pet them while they’re sitting in your lap or give them a massage. Cats also don’t mind having their hair brushed every now and then.

2. Headbutting

When a cat is bunting you, often called headbutting, they will tap their head and rub their cheek along whatever part of your body they’re close to. Since cats have scent glands all over their body, bunting leaves their mark on their humans.

This isn’t a sign of marking their territory, however; it shows that the cat trusts you enough to get close. If they’re trying to socialize with their head close to you, you can try to give your own headbutt back. Just remember to keep it gentle and see how they respond.

3. Bringing You a Present

While cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, they’re still hunters by nature. If you own an outdoor cat, they may leave a dead bird or mouse as a gift to show their affection. As unnerving as this might be, it’s best not to react by giving them treats so they’ll let it go; this will reinforce the behavior.

You might notice an indoor cat gifting you with one of their toys when you walk through the door. This means that they want to get some playtime in with their favorite person. Playtime can also help outdoor cats too since they may transition exclusively to toys rather than bringing you local wildlife from outside.
