While it’s certainly true that some breeds need a lot more stimulation than others, every dog must cope with boredom from time to time. And since bored dogs tend to be destructive ones, it’s wise for pet owners to provide lots of exercise and mentally engaging activities over the course of the day. For many families, that means hiring a pet sitter to check in on their furry friends while they're at work or school. Here are just a few signs your dogs could benefit from regular visits with a pet sitter.

3 Signs Your Dog Is Bored

1. Chewing or Digging

Destructive behaviors, like chewing on throw pillows and digging up plants, are a clear sign of boredom. They also put your pets at risk of choking or otherwise hurting themselves. If your dogs always seem to get into trouble when you’re gone, leave them with more constructive activities, like solving puzzle toys. Having a pet sitter stop by daily to take them on a long walk can also alleviate boredom and tire them out

2. Barking or Whining

Barking and whining are attention-seeking behaviors, which means dogs do them when they're not just bored but lonely, too. Leave on the television or radio when you leave and try to stick to a regular routine so the pups get comfortable with your schedule—and with the idea that you’ll always return.

3. Bouncing off the Walls

Sometimes, dogs that are bored won’t exhibit any specific behaviors but will instead run around the house, jump on the furniture, chase each other, and generally just “bounce off the walls.” Such behaviors indicate they're not getting enough exercise, which could eventually have a negative impact on their weight and overall health. Talk to your vet and ask just how much exercise each of your dogs needs daily so you can work it into their routine.
