Along with visiting your dentist regularly, brushing and flossing are critical parts of an effective oral hygiene routine. However, one step that’s sometimes overlooked is tongue brushing. This part of the mouth deserves attention, just like the surfaces of your teeth and the spaces between them. Here’s what to know about this beneficial habit.

Why You Should Brush Your Tongue

Brushing your teeth alone is not enough because any bacteria picked up by the toothbrush can easily transfer onto your tongue. From there, the contaminants can make their way back to your teeth through saliva. Cleaning your tongue is vital to achieving a truly deep clean that protects your long-term oral health.

This habit will help eliminate bacterial accumulation, dead cells, and debris responsible for causing harsh odors. Reducing this buildup may also improve your sense of taste by breaking down the plaque that might otherwise interfere with the way certain foods taste.

A common health concern dentists treat is oral thrush, a type of fungal infection that may cause loss of taste, redness, oral sores, and white patches. Brushing your tongue at least twice a day is a key preventive measure.

How to Brush Your Tongue

A tongue scraper is the easiest way to clean this part of the mouth. Start at the back of the tongue and gently draw the scraper toward the front, making sure to cover the top and side surfaces. Rinse your mouth and the scraper, and repeat at least once per day.

If you don’t have a scraper, a toothbrush can aid in fighting bacteria. Using a soft-bristled brush, stick your tongue out as far as it will go. Start at the back of your tongue, but be careful not to stick your brush too close to the back of your throat, as this may cause you to gag. Lightly brush the top and sides of the tongue from the back to the front. Rinse your mouth and brush when you're finished, and repeat every time you take care of your teeth.
