When it comes to gynecology, Pap smears are both some of the most important services as well as some of the most frequently misunderstood. In this simple procedure, also called a cervical smear or a Pap test, a doctor will collect a sample of cervical cells in order to test for cervical cancer and other abnormalities. Unfortunately, many myths about this procedure may discourage women from seeking one. Here are just a few of the many misconceptions you may encounter and the reality behind them.

What Are Some Common Myths About Pap Smears?

1. They’re Painful

While it’s true that, like any medical procedure, cervical smears may be uncomfortable, they're rarely painful. The process involves a doctor using a surgical instrument called a speculum to stretch the vaginal opening in order to obtain a sample.

Many people find this experience unpleasant, but unless the opening is unusually tight or small, it won’t be painful. It’s even possible to avoid pain in those with smaller vaginal openings by using a child-sized speculum.

2. Sexually Inactive People Don’t Need Them

It’s common to hear that if you’ve never had sex or haven’t for many months or years, you don’t need a Pap smear. The reality is that cervical cancer can develop regardless of your level of sexual activity.

Sometimes, doctors combine Pap tests with those designed to identify human papillomavirus (HPV), which is most commonly transmitted during sex or through touch and which can contribute to cervical cancer. Even those who aren’t sexually active can therefore detect potentially dangerous conditions before they arise by scheduling regular cervical tests.

3. They’re Unaffordable

Under federal law, private health insurance plans are required to cover Pap tests and other essential gynecological services, as they fall under preventive healthcare. Depending on the terms of your health insurance policy, you may still have to pay a small co-pay, but most women’s health providers work to keep costs for such vital procedures low and affordable.
