Many women experience irregular periods. They can manifest as shorter or longer menstrual cycles, bleeding or spotting between periods and heavy bleeding during the period. These irregularities can occur for a number of reasons, some of which are not a significant problem. However, you should still consult a gynecologist to determine if you have any health issues. Here is a brief guide to irregular periods.

Causes of Irregular Periods

Menstrual irregularities are very common. Adolescent girls and women approaching menopause are most afflicted by irregular periods because of changes to estrogen and progesterone hormone levels.

Other reasons your period may fluctuate:

  • Stress
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Hormonal birth control or intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Excessive exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Cervical and endometrial cancer

When Is a Period Normal or Abnormal?

The typical menstrual cycle occurs every 28 days, but one lasting 21 days to 35 days is considered normal by gynecologists. A cycle is determined by counting from the last day of the previous period until the first day of the next period. A period should last four to seven days, and the flow should be somewhat similar every month.

Periods are considered abnormal when:

  • A cycle lasts fewer than 21 days and more than 35 days
  • Periods that last longer than seven days
  • Missing three or more periods in a row
  • Menstrual flow is noticeably heavier or lighter than usual
  • Cycle length varies significantly every month
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods, after sex or after menopause
  • Severe pain, nausea and vomiting

When to See a Gynecologist

While irregular periods are common, you should still consult a gynecologist if you experience any of the symptoms of abnormal menstruation. While the cause may be as simple as stress, the doctor can check for more serious underlying health issues. They will also recommend treatment, which may range from lifestyle changes to medication or surgery.
