Scoliosis is a condition that can affect children and adults, although it's most common in childhood. 3 Stretches Good for People With Scoliosis

1. Upward and Downward Dog

While most often associated with yoga, these stretches are ideal for increasing flexibility in your back. Start in a plank position and push your hips up towards the sky as far as you can go. Hold the position for two seconds, then move your hips back towards the floor again, getting as close to the ground as you can comfortably. Repeat the movements two to three times for five to ten total reps.

2. Sitting Rotational Stretches

These maneuvers also increase flexibility, as well as decrease back pain caused by spinal curves. In a sitting position, take your right leg and cross it over the left, so that the sole of your right foot is resting against the floor. Position your right arm behind you for support, and twist your midsection in the direction of your right leg. You can also strive for a deeper stretch by looking over your right shoulder as you stretch. Hold for as long as you feel comfortable, then repeat on the opposite side. 

3. Step Down and Arm Reach

This stretch is good for people whose scoliosis has caused one leg to be longer than the other. Take a small box or step and step onto it with the longer leg. Bend the knee of that leg and lower the opposite leg towards the ground. As you bend, take the arm on the same side as the lowered leg and raise it into the air. This maneuver should only be performed on the shorter leg, repeating two to three times for five to ten total repetitions.
