The sound of vinyl records is often described as richer and warmer than digitally-formatted files. This, paired with interesting artwork on record jackets, is why many people start vinyl album collections. To preserve your investments for future generations, use the following care steps.

How to Preserve Vinyl Albums

1. Put Records in Inner Sleeves

Each record should be placed in an inner sleeve that can fit inside the album jacket. The sleeve holds the record in place and acts as a barrier to keep lint and other particles off the LP. If the inner sleeves that came with albums are worn, replace them with new ones made of acid- and alkaline-free paper or PVC-free plastic. These materials won’t release residue that causes records to decompose in long-term storage.

2. Invest in a Record-Safe Cleaning Solution

The bristles could also leave scratches in the vinyl that affect sound quality. To lift grime without causing damage, spritz a cleaning solution formulated for vinyl albums on a microfiber cloth. The solution doesn’t feature alcohol or abrasive particles that can warp or nick your investments. Gently wipe down the surfaces using circular strokes.

3. Store Records Vertically

When placing records on shelves or in boxes, don’t stack them horizontally. The weight of one record resting on another could cause the vinyl to warp. That’s why records should be stored in vertical rows. The storage area should also be dry and room temperature to keep the vinyl intact.
