As outdoor temperatures rise, you'll rely on the air conditioner to keep your living spaces comfortable. Once you turn on the system, you expect fresh, cool air to move through the vents. However, if you notice warm air flowing instead, here are a few reasons why you may be experiencing this issue.

Why Doesn't the Air Conditioner Blow Cool Air?

1. Electrical Issues

A good amount of power is needed to boot the air conditioning motor. Hot air can result from loose wiring or an electrical issue hindering the system's capability. If this problem occurs, turn off your air conditioner and check if a circuit breaker has tripped or if power cords have been pulled out. A surge may have overloaded the device, in which case, you may need to have a blown-out fuse replaced to restore optimal operation.

2. Old Air Filters

Air filters capture dust, debris, pet dander, and other allergens to enhance the home's air quality. Over time, these parts will become dirty.

When they become excessively clogged, the motor can shut down because it's unable to get enough air moving. Overheating can ensue, prompting the system to fail or blow hot air instead of temperature-controlled air. Luckily, swapping filters every month can prevent this issue.

3. Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is the fluid that flows through condenser coils to exchange heat and provide cool, temperature-controlled air. When there is a leak, low levels of this liquid will negatively affect performance, and warm air will start to blow instead. Because only licensed professionals can handle the fluid, allow an AC contractor to locate and patch leaks and replenish the coolant.

4. Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are located in the exterior AC unit. When dirt and debris accumulate outside these parts, the contaminants act as insulation. By making it difficult for heat exchange to occur within, they restrict the flow of cold air. Clearing debris and hosing down exposed pieces as part of your AC maintenance routine can rectify this issue.
