A hand truck is a useful tool that can prove invaluable when transporting heavy load. You might need it to cart something to your car, or when you’re in the midst of a move. But using the equipment properly is key to avoiding injuries. Here are some basic tips to brush up on before you get started.

Do:

Choose the right one.

Don’t rush when selecting a hand truck. Opt for one that’s made with sturdy, durable stainless steel, which will support heavy loads with ease. Inflatable wheels are superior to solid wheels, so long as they’re completely inflated. Finally, make sure the hand truck has a strap so you can wrap it snugly around heavy objects that require additional support.

Stack your boxes carefully.

Hand trucks are efficient at helping you move multiple boxes at a time, but you must stack them right to prevent them from toppling while in transit. Make sure they’re placed in a straight, balanced line to prevent uneven weight distribution on one side or another. The top box should press at least partially against the horizontal support bar to prevent it from sliding off. Make sure that you can see fully over the boxes, too; if it’s too high, you risk losing balance or falling.

Don’t:

Leave delicate items bare.

While the hand truck will comfortably transport even heavy items, there’s a risk that its metal bar and base plate may cause scratch the surface. Wrap the item with furniture pads to create a protective barrier that prevents damage to the material. If the item has drawers, remove items from inside, then secure the drawers with protective straps to keep them in place.

Move fast on stairs.

You’ll lose momentum on stairs because you need to pace yourself slowly. When going upstairs, pull the truck up methodically and gently; this will prevent anything from bouncing off. When going down, avoid tipping the tool too deeply back, or you risk developing an unsteady momentum when you aren’t prepared for it. Always move straight forward instead of turning at an angle, which could otherwise cause your items to fall off.
