Casters and wheels are easy ways to move objects from one point to another, but like everything, they need to stop at some point. Choosing the right kind of brake for your casters and wheels needs to be determined by the application and your requirements. You need to consider different factors to help you choose which type of brake you need, including how heavy-duty your load is, if you need to lock both the swivel head and the wheel, and whether or not you want the brake pedal to remain stationary.

3 Types of Brakes for Casters

1. Ideal-Stop

casters and wheels

This type of brake has a brake pedal that is attached to the top plate so it never swivels with the caster. Instead, the pedal remains stationary and won’t get out of reach. With other types, you might have to reach under the cart to reposition the brake to lock or unlock it. This brake is great for preventing leg injuries and reducing trip hazards.

2. Total Lock

A total lock brake has the ability to lock two mechanisms at the same time. Instead of only stopping the wheel in place, it also locks the swivel head from turning. While not recommended to use for towing, the total lock brake can be used to transport heavy loads or for a moving workstation that needs to be stationary at times.

3. Tech Lock

With a tech lock brake, there is a definite way to engage the brake since the brake mechanism is on the face of the wheel. These provide more versatility with which kind of caster you choose. You can install a tech lock brake onto casters that you already own, rather than needing to buy a whole new caster like you would with a total lock brake.
