As a first-time homeowner, you’ll quickly learn the importance of preventative plumbing maintenance. Looking after the pipes and fixtures is key to preventing clogs, leaks, and other problems that can otherwise require emergency assistance. Here are a few suggestions to help you maintain the system effectively.

How to Care for Your Plumbing System

1. Be Mindful of Flushing

It’s only safe to flush human waste and toilet paper—even flushable wipes don’t always break down efficiently in the pipes. Avoid flushing common bathroom products, like cotton swabs, dental floss, and hygiene products.

2. Conduct Regular Leak Checks

Inspect the exposed pipes under the sinks, and look for water damage since this indicates a leak. Common signs include puddles, water stains, mold formation, musty odors, and higher than normal Water bills. A spike in the water bill may indicate a “below ground” leak. If you find a leak, have a plumber repair it promptly to prevent further damage and avoid elevated water bills.

3. Watch What You Rinse

Be mindful of what goes into the kitchen sink, as many foods cause stubborn blockages. Avoid rinsing down fats, oils, grease, and starches, as they can all clog the pipes. If you have to put scraps in the sink, run the faucet with the disposal, and keep the water flowing for 15  seconds after you turn off the appliance.

4. Clear Away Scaly Buildup

Limescale accumulation is a common cause of sluggish water pressure in sinks and showers. To avoid this issue, wipe the sink faucet and the showerhead weekly to prevent sediment from collecting. If the water pressure affects more than one fixture, it may be due to a more significant plumbing problem in the home.

5. Flush the Water Heater

Flush the water heater annually to prevent sediment from accumulating at the tank’s base. Allowing it to build up forces the appliance to work harder than necessary to heat your water. An extreme buildup can lead to more serious concerns, like weak pressure, burst pipes, and premature failure.
