If you recently received your COVID-19 vaccination card, you might be thinking about where you want to travel and what countries require the vaccine. Since the card is a vital document, keeping it safe is essential. Use this guide to protect your card, especially if an overseas vacation is in your future.

What to Do With Your COVID-19 Vaccination Card

1. Make Several Copies

Take the card to a printing store to make copies or do so at home if you have the equipment. You can also capture the card with your phone for digital copies. Whatever you decide, keep a copy of the card in your wallet or purse instead of the original. Pack the original card if you travel internationally by plane, train, or ship. Otherwise, put it in a safe place in your house, such as with your birth certificate and Social Security card.

2. Protect the Card With Plastic

Avoid laminating the card since you’ll likely add booster information to it. Laminating the card can also smudge its ink and render the vaccination information unreadable, which can create entry problems before flights or cruises. Place the card in a plastic sleeve to protect it from spills and general wear and tear.

3. Don’t Post Pictures

Refrain from posting images of the card since it contains sensitive personal information that can be used for identity theft purposes. You'll also lose Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) protection that keeps patient information confidential. Posting voids this protection and makes the information subject to portal hacking in addition to identity theft.
