As states across the country are slowly emerging from quarantine, more people are beginning to travel again. However, the risk of COVID-19 hasn’t entirely gone away, so the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) has imposed some new temporary guidelines to protect the safety of both passengers and airline employees. If you’re planning to travel this summer, below are a few things you should know about the security screening process.

A Guide to New Temporary TSA Procedures

1. Scan Your Own Boarding Pass

The new temporary regulations are designed to minimize touch points as much as possible, reducing the risk of transmission to passengers and agents. Instead of handing your boarding pass to the agent, you'll scan it yourself at the podium. Afterward, you’ll hold it up so the TSA agent can do a visual inspection without touching it.

2. Separate Food

travelFood in carry-on bags often sets off warnings that require hand inspections by TSA agents. To limit the amount of contact agents will have with your items, pack all food in a clear plastic bag, just like you do with toiletries. When you get to the security checkpoint, take the bag out of your luggage and place it into a bin for screening.

3. Wear a Mask

To make traveling as safe as possible, all employees at the airport are required to wear masks, including TSA agents. Passengers are also required to wear face masks, and airlines and airports have even made them mandatory. During the screening process, you may be asked to adjust your mask or lower it momentarily.
