1. German Christmas Markets

Dating back to the 15th century, German markets are a staple during the Christmas season. Most begin at the start of Advent—the last week in November or the first week in December—and are open until Christmas Eve.

Each open-air stall in the market is filled with homemade crafts, baked goods, and plenty of other food and drink options. While walking through, market-goers can enjoy traditional Christmas music and dance performances.

2. Fried Chicken Dinner In Japan

Even though only 1% of Japan’s population is Christian, many residents love to get into the Christmas spirit. With schools only closed for one day during the holiday, most families have a simple dinner at Kentucky Fried Chicken® rather than making a spread of various foods.

This tradition started in 1974 after a marketing campaign with the slogan, “Kurisumasu ni wa kenttakki!”, or “Kentucky for Christmas!” became popular. 

3. Dutch Christmas Treats from Saint Nicholas 

While children in the United States receive presents from Saint Nicholas, children from the Netherlands are visited by Sinterklaas. He is known for his thick, white beard, red cape, and matching headdress.

On December 5th of each year, he places delicious treats such as chocolate and marzipan in children’s shoes for them to find when they awaken. 

4. Mexican Christmas Pastorelas

Between December 16th and 24th, many Mexican churches retell the Christmas story in the form of Pastorelas, or Shepherds’ Plays. The start of this yearly tradition is marked by Las Posadas, which is a nightly parade that tells the story of how Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem searching for shelter.

These processions are led by children dressed in silver and gold-colored robes as musicians and other adults follow.
