Comfortable and stylish office furniture makes a great first impression on potential clients and keeps employee morale high. It’s important to keep it clean and looking great, and each piece requires unique care. For a professional and polished appearance, follow these simple cleaning tips.

Five Tips for Keeping Your Office Furniture Clean

1. Schedule Regular Cleaning

To keep your office looking sharp, you will want to schedule a service to clean regularly. In addition to cleaning floors, windows, and bathrooms, they will attend to your office furniture to ensure a professional appearance. In between scheduled cleanings, you may want to assign light daily dusting to an in-house staff member as well.

2. Provide Instruction

Don’t assume that your cleaning service knows which furniture to clean and what supplies to use. During your initial consultation with them, take the time to make sure to provide specific instruction and make your expectations clear.

3. Use the Right Cleaning Supplies

Office FurnitureSome of your office furniture, like wooden desks, may require special solutions to be used on them. For older wood furniture, you’ll want to use clean, warm water followed by a quality polish made for wood surfaces. Newer wood furniture (primarily made since 2000) will have a catalyzed lacquer or varnish type of finish which should not get wax or polish applied to them.  If your office chairs are made of fabric, they should periodically be steam cleaned to remove stains and deep dirt.

4. Protect Your Furniture

Teach the staff to report any mechanical problems they see with the company’s furniture.  It’s easier to get repairs made before they become major issues.  Some companies use the short work week of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years for preventive maintenance.   Go around to all of your chairs and inspect them.  Tighten bolts, check for worn-out pieces.

5. Remove Spills and Stains Immediately

When a major stain is created, it’s important to clean it immediately.  Before trying a stain remover product try clean up with simple paper towel and warm water.  Continue blotting (not rubbing) the area to pull the stain out.  Many set-up (dry) stains will clean using a spray of Windex and blotting with a paper towel.   Keep stain remover on hand—responding to a stain quickly can go a long way towards extending the life of your office furniture.
