When choosing a headstone, you’ll need to decide if it will be engraved or etched. Both options allow for beautiful, long-lasting memorials. The major difference is in the level of detail each technique allows.

What is Engraving?

Engraving is the most common method of carving letters, numbers, and symbols into a headstone. It’s the process of carving images into the granite. In the past, it was done with a hammer and chisel, but it’s now mostly done using a sandblaster, which involves shooting small grains of sand through a hose to carve into the granite.

Engraving can be done on either dark- or light-colored granite. Sometimes the deep cuts are coated with black or white ink to help the engraving stand out. Although engraving does allow for beautiful and intricate lettering designs, it’s not suitable for adding photographs to headstones. Sandblasting cannot achieve the level of intricate detail necessary for that.

What Is Etching?

headstoneIf you wish to add a photograph or detailed image to your headstone, etching is the best option. Etching involves scratching the surface of the stone in a precise manner. It can be done by hand, using a diamond tipped engraving tool, or by laser.

Hand etching is a specialized skill. The artist creates the letters and images one dot at a time, which allows for a great deal of creativity. For instance, the artist can combine different images into one for a custom headstone. Hand etching also scratches deeper into the surface of the stone.

Laser etching uses a computerized laser to scratch the images into the headstone, allowing for accurate reproductions of photographs. All types of etching can only be done on dark granite so that there is enough contrast to see the images.
