The teachings held dear by the Lutheran church were developed by Martin Luther in the 16th century and vary from many other forms of Christianity. If you're in search of a way to get in touch with your faith and join a thriving religious community, here are a few things you should know.

What New Parishioners Should Know About the Lutheran Faith

1. Two Sacraments Are Recognized

Unlike other forms of Christianity, Lutherans only believe in two sacraments. Baptism is the first, which requires the sprinkling of water on the recipient and can be conducted at any age. Communion is the second sacrament observed by the Lutheran church, which involves consuming bread and wine symbolizing the body and blood of Christ. Communion is often referred to as the Last Supper or the Supper of the Lord.

2. The Bible Is Inspired Directly by God

Lutherans believe that the bible was created directly by the Holy Spirit. In this sense, each word contained in the book is "God-Breathed", as opposed to being written by men inspired by God. Accordingly, the Scriptures contain all the essential information for parishioners to lead an honorific and godly life.

3. Salvation Is Achieved by Faith Alone

Other sects of Christianity believe that a person achieves salvation through a combination of God's Grace and good works, meaning endeavors that benefit a fellow man or show the person's commitment to their faith. This is not the case in the Lutheran church, as salvation is achieved through faith alone. Being baptized in the church is the lone requirement for receiving salvation. Additionally, Lutherans believe that heaven and hell are physical locations.
