The Bible has countless passages that provide comfort and guidance to Christians. Yet, having been written many centuries ago, it’s understandable that the sacred text may seem daunting for those who haven’t read it thoroughly. Fortunately, the lessons in the passages apply to life today as much as they did back then. Here are some tips for reading and interpreting the Bible to uncover meaningful messages.

How to Understand Bible Verses

1. Choose the Right Translation

Some versions of the Bible are more literal, word-for-word translations, while others communicate thoughts and ideas. Many beginners find the New Living Translation to be a readable option with language commonly used today, while the New American Standard Bible is a more literal interpretation. If you’re attending church, it may be best to read the version your pastor uses so you can revisit passages at home.

2. Start Small

While reading the sacred text from cover to cover is certainly doable, it can also be an overwhelming goal for new readers. Consider focusing on just one book, chapter, or verse. You don’t have to go in chronological order; find a passage that speaks to you and start there.

3. Make It a Daily Habit

The more often you read, the more familiar you’ll become with the language, people, and places in the Bible. Aim to make it a daily habit and add it to your schedule. Some people enjoy reading scripture right before bed, while others prefer to do it first thing in the morning.

4. Try the SOAP Method

Many people find success using the SOAP method: Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Start by reading the scripture, then think about the verses that stand out most to you. Observe by seeing what you learn each time you revisit the passage. Apply your findings to your daily life and finish with a prayer.

5. Journal as You Read

You may not derive a lot of meaning from a particular passage at first. However, if you write about it, you might find the thoughts come to you the deeper you explore the text. Consider journaling as you read, and coming back to the same section again later. You may derive different meanings later on.
