Some frame damage after an automobile accident is obvious, like a crushed front end or huge side dents. However, others are more subtle. If you’ve recently been in an accident, here are some signs to look for that may indicate the need for collision repair and framework

How to Tell If Your Car’s Frame Is Damaged

1. Sagging

Sagging occurs when one part of the frame is dented, creating small gaps between the panels. This allows the other vehicle parts to lean toward the gaps, ultimately stressing the axles and causing excess wear on the tires. Frame twisting also results in similar gaps and damage. A collision repair shop may use frame straighteners to address sagging or twisting.

2. Swaying

Sagging often occurs when a vehicle corner is hit, causing the frame to lean slightly to one side. This may cause veering to one side when the steering wheel is straight, or the vehicle may vibrate when driving straight, since the tires are pointed slightly to one side. A frame straightener can solve this issue and prevent the alignment and transmission issues that often arise if it isn’t addressed.

3. Mashing

Mashing generally occurs in head-on or rear-end collisions. The frame is essentially compressed, causing some body panels to appear wrinkled or to overlap one another. The force of this type of collision can also extend to other parts of the vehicle, causing twisting or sagging throughout the frame. Frame straightening extends the body panels to their intended size and can address other frame damage as well.
