As the go-to towing company in Fairbanks, AK, Ron’s Service & Towing has seen all too often how a little rain can drastically change driving conditions. In the 54 years they’ve been in business, they’ve seen countless drivers run off wet roads because they weren’t taking the proper precautions. Wet pavement is slicker than you think, and a rain-spattered windshield is always an indication of dangerous road conditions. Here are their top tips to keep Alaska drivers safe in rainy weather.

3 Safety Tips From an Experienced Towing Company

1. Turn on Your Headlights

Even if it’s the middle of the day, you need to turn your headlights on when it starts to rain. Alaska and every other state has a law that says drivers must use their headlights when their visibility is compromised, and many states require them to be on when the windshield wipers are in use. Your headlights might not do much to illuminate the road in front of you, but they will help other drivers see your vehicle.

2. Don’t Underestimate Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning is what towinghappens when the water on the roadway prevents your tires from getting traction on the ground. It only takes one-twelfth of an inch of water and a speed of more than 35 miles per hour to send your vehicle out of control. If you start to feel your car slipping, ease off the accelerator, and keep the steering wheel straight until you regain traction or can pull over safely.

3. Slow Down

The only way to prevent hydroplaning is to slow down. Remember: Speed limits are set assuming prime driving conditions. Anything more than a slight drizzle will lower visibility and most likely cause more traffic. The heavier the rain, the slower you should go. The water will add seconds to your vehicle’s typical stopping time. You’ll need to give yourself more time to slow down, and taking turns will be more dangerous at high speeds.

Protect yourself and your family by driving safely in the rain. If something happens and you need a tow truck or roadside assistance, call Ron’s Service & Towing at (907) 456-4224. You’ll also find more information about their services online.
