FAQ About Enrolling Your Child in Gymnastics
From tumbling classes to competitive teams that showcase at the national level, there’s a gymnastics program for everyone. If you’re considering enrolling your child in one, you probably have a few questions about these courses. To help you prepare for the talk you’ll have with your center when you enroll, here are answers to a few of the questions you may have.
FAQ About Gymnastics Classes
When can children start doing gymnastics?
Gymnastics is one of those sports that kids can start early. Some classes are designed for parents and toddlers who are as young as 18 months old. There are also preschool courses tailored to three- to four-year-old children. While such programs focus less on technique and more on maintaining flexibility while honing critical motor skills, they’re a great way to introduce your kids to the sport.
Do I have to buy any special equipment for my kids?
Gymnastics requires little gear. Aside from leotards or gym clothes, your kids won’t need anything special for class. As they progress, you may have to purchase hand grips, and if they want to perform at a competitive level, investing in equipment for the home could be worth it. Floor mats are relatively affordable and last several years.
What should children wear to class?
At many centers, boys are instructed to wear a sweatsuit or shorts and a T-shirt, while girls should wear leotards or shorts and a T-shirt. This gym clothing should not have any zippers or buttons that could cause pain during falls. Additionally, make sure your kids tie back their hair and take off any barrettes, jewelry, shoes, and socks before entering the workout area.
What if my child misses a class?
Some centers offer make-up classes on a limited basis for those who miss practice. Children may only attend a make-up class if they are currently enrolled in a program. Each student can participate in up to three make-up classes per quarter, except during the June to August quarter, when there is no limit.
