Do:

Seal the grout and joints.

Porcelain typically doesn’t require sealing. However, the grout between tiles is vulnerable to wear and moisture, so it should be sealed to prevent loosening and mold and mildew growth.

Sealants should be reapplied periodically. To test whether it’s time to do so, apply a few drops of water to a section of grout. If the water absorbs in under a minute, it’s time for resealing.

Use a professional-strength cleaner.

tilesClean the grout regularly to remove any built-up dirt, as the tile may absorb grime that is left in place for too long. Choose an eco-friendly cleaning agent free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can remove soap scum, oils, mildew, algae, wax, and grease. Scrub stubborn grime gently with a soft-bristled brush.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaners.

Harsh chemical cleaners, like scouring powder, and rough tools, like steel wool, can break down the glaze on porcelain and wear away grout. Although porcelain is scratch-resistant, repeated abrasion can damage it and weaken its glaze, making it vulnerable to moisture and mold growth.

Let stains settle.

Cleaning agents, foods, and other substances that contain strong pigments can permanently stain porcelain if left on the surface too long, so wipe up spills as soon as they occur. If you notice stains, apply diluted vinegar or cleaner to the affected area for five to 10 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush to reduce or remove the discoloration.
