Retractable awnings turn patios into shaded outdoor rooms, adorn windows to protect furnishings and decor from UV damage, and add value to homes. If you recently had awnings installed, it is important to learn how to protect your investments so that they last for years. Review how they withstand the elements below to ensure the longevity of your awnings.

Rain

While most retractable awnings offer weather resistance, they are not designed to hold large volumes of water. One gallon of water weighs 8 pounds, so a heavy rainstorm will stretch the fabric if the awning is not designed to support the extra weight. Cotton, linen, and hemp shrink and absorb moisture without waterproof sealant. Acrylic material will also shrink and stretch in extreme temperatures unless the sealant is applied. Vinyl does not shrink, stretch, or absorb moisture.

Take your awnings down if a big rainstorm is in the forecast, or at least adjust the pitch so that water slides off the accessories instead of pooling. Apply waterproof sealant as needed based on the manufacturer's directions or consider upgrading your retractable awnings to those with higher-quality fabric.

Wind

retractable awningsWind can rip fabric, dent metal, and loosen awning components. If gusts are severe enough, they can remove the awnings from their mounts, causing them to hit your windows, siding, and other outdoor furniture.

Look for retractable awnings with ratings of at least five on the Beaufort Wind Scale, as they are better able to withstand extreme gusts. However, it is always a smart idea to retract your awnings before high winds arrive.

Snow

Snow puts even more strain on retractable awnings than rain because one foot of snow weighs up to 18.73 pounds. It will stretch awning fabric if the model is not rated for snow or more than a few snowflakes fall. Retractable awnings can feature snow ratings between 5 and 80 pounds per square foot, depending on the frame and material.

As with rain and wind, retract or take down your awnings in anticipation of a severe snowstorm.
