Sunrooms are designed to capture heat and bring in as much sunlight as possible, so they can quickly get unbearably hot in the summer. However, some simple steps will help you enjoy your sunroom year-round. Use the strategies below to keep the room naturally cooler and make it an enjoyable place to spend time in the warmer seasons without worrying about an expensive cooling bill.

How to Cool a Sunroom

1. Install Blinds

Blinds can be strategically used to block direct sunlight from entering the windows. They’ll reflect the sunlight—and the heat it brings with it—while allowing the indirect light to brighten the space, while also maximizing your privacy. Some blinds can be installed between the panes of glass, which will need to be done at installation. If you’re adding them after installation, you can simply hang the type of blinds you want on the inside of the glass.

2. Keep Air Moving

sunroomMoving air feels more refreshing than stagnant air since it carries water vapor and heat away from your skin to cool you down. Install some fans at the floor level to blow the air upwards towards your vents, which pushes the hot air out of the space. If you have an air-conditioned interior, you can also use the fans to pull the conditioned air into the sunroom.

3. Tint the Windows

Tinting the windows will block some of the light that comes into the room, but it will also reflect more heat, keeping your sunroom from reaching a comfortable, warm temperature. You can choose a percentage tint that still allows in enough light to keep the space bright, but make it naturally cooler. It will also make the sunroom’s interior a little more private by making it difficult to see inside.
