Original Medicare (OM) is a health insurance program for seniors created by the U.S. government in 1965, under which medical providers are paid directly for each service utilized by the insured. It is the most common type of Medicare plan, but it is not the only option. For instance, people not satisfied with Original Medicare can choose Medicare Advantage (MA), also called "Part C" or Medicare Private Health Care. Below, you'll find an explanation of Medicare Advantage and some of the pros and cons of this type of coverage.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

MA provides all the benefits of OM plans, except people sign up with a private insurer instead of with a government agency. The government agrees to pay the insurance provider a set amount per enrollee, and the insurer agrees to provide enrollees the same health insurance benefits received by those on Original Medicare. However, rules, costs, and coverage restrictions may differ from plan to plan, and some MA plans offer additional benefits.

What Are the Pros & Cons of Medicare Advantage?

Medicare advantage in Mountain Grove, MOMost MA plans offer some type of prescription drug coverage, which is not typically available under Original Medicare. Moreover, the government caps the amount of out-of-pocket expenses you can incur under MA plans. Beyond $6,700 (at the time of this writing), the plan covers all expenses.  This is not the case under OM. MA also offers vision and dental coverage, which OM does not. However, the downside to Medicare Advantage is that fewer providers accept this insurance, and some of the plans require authorization from your designated provider if you need to see a specialist. If you want the most freedom and flexibility in choosing care providers, OM might be for you.
