Although hydraulic hoses consist of flexible rubber and wire layers, they still require proper routing to avoid abrasion and excessive heat damage. However, many business owners overlook this process, leading to machine failure. Learning how to install and arrange the hoses extends their service life and helps avoid staff injuries, so here’s how to plan a successful assembly route.

How to Route Hydraulic Hoses

1. Determine Proper Length

Correct hose length prevents tension due to the hydraulic system’s movement or vibration. This measurement is calculated based on the distance from the collar’s bottom to the end of the sealing surface. Keep in mind that contraction due to pressure can lead to improper sizing, causing the fittings to pull loose. Fortunately, you can address this problem by adding at least 5% slack to the total length. This measure will avoid stress on the assembly.

2. Avoid Contact

A hydraulic hose has a protective cover typically consisting of either high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Although the part is durable, constant direct surface contact with abrasive materials causes it to wear out prematurely.

Avoid placing the assembly near other equipment and sharp surfaces to keep the protective cover intact. If this is not possible, invest in abrasion covers to prevent internal wear.

3. Use Components From the Same Manufacturers

Fittings allow the hose to connect to the hydraulic systems’ components, including valves, cylinders, and pumps. Although some can match tubing from a different brand, using them will cause strain on the joints and lead to leaks and bursts.

Additionally, interchanging crimpers from multiple manufacturers to connect hoses increases the risk of assembly failure that causes site injuries. Before routing, invest in a high-quality hose assembly to avoid downtime from failed hydraulic systems.
