How Hydraulic Systems Work
Hydraulic systems contain four main parts. The reservoir is the vessel that holds the fluid. Valves direct the fluid’s movement. The pump provides the power that moves the fluid in the reservoir, creating hydraulic energy. Actuators then take the hydraulic energy and convert it into mechanical energy.
As pressure is applied to the fluid in the reservoir by the pump, the fluid enacts a force. This is then transferred to create physical movement. In the case of a hydraulic motor, for example, the flow of pressure results in a twisting force. In the case of a hydraulic cylinder, the movement created is a linear one—up and down or side to side.

Hydraulics require only a small amount of fluid to create a large amount of energy, making such systems an efficient and affordable means of powering repetitive movements. They’re used in various contexts, including automobiles, construction equipment, and manufacturing plants, like paper mills or steel processing systems.
In cars, for example, hydraulics form an essential part of the brake system. When the driver pushes their foot on the pedal, fluid enters the brake lines. Pressure is then transferred to the brake calipers, which clamp down on the wheels’ rotors in response. The resulting friction slows down and stops the vehicle.
