4 Factors for Choosing Hydraulic Hose Fittings
Hydraulic hose fittings bridge hoses, valves, pumps, and cylinders, among other hydraulic system components. Made of plastic, aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and brass, these hoses prevent hydraulic fluid leaks and help regulate pressure for safe operations. Here are a few tips for selecting the right hose fittings for your needs.
What to Consider for Hydraulic Hose Fitting Selection
1. Length & Diameter of the Hose
Keep the length of the hose you’re connecting in mind. The hose has to be flexible and long enough to accommodate the machine’s movements without stressing the fittings. Conversely, a hose that is too long restricts fluid flow to lower the system’s efficiency.
The hose diameter also requires consideration to avoid linear velocity issues that cause friction, heat, and pressure.
2. Pressure Rating
Review the pressure rating of each fitting. The hose should feature a maximum working pressure (WP) rating to deal with normal hydraulic system pressure, as should the fittings. If the fittings are below the maximum WP rating, the resulting discrepancies can result in leaks from hydraulic hose structural damage.
Stainless steel versions offer the highest ratings at up to 20,000 pounds per square inch (psi).
3. Material
Review hydraulic hose fitting materials not only in terms of pressure ratings but also corrosion resistance. While plastic fittings offer the highest corrosion resistance rating, they’re not as durable as other materials, such as steel and stainless steel. Lightweight aluminum fittings also resist rust, unlike brass versions that are susceptible to corrosion.
4. Chemical Compatibility & Temperature Range
Ensure your selected fittings are chemically compatible with the O-rings, hose inner tube, and cover. Chemical compatibility is especially important if gas will flow through the hose to avoid serious problems such as fires, toxic gas inhalation, and explosions.
Also, note the temperature of the gas or liquid flowing through the hose as well as the surrounding temperature to avoid malfunctions in extreme heat.
