After getting new prescription glasses, it’s common to have headaches for a few days. Several potential factors can contribute to this issue, besides eye strain issues which can strike at any time. A headache with new glasses is usually not a cause for concern, but here’s how to tell if you need to go back to your optometrist and minimize discomfort in the meantime.

Why You Might Have a Headache With New Glasses

1. Eyes Need to Adapt

The eyes use small muscles to provide sight. When you wear new glasses, the visual organs focus differently. However, the muscles can be fatigued or painful because of the unaccustomed position. Adjusting to bifocals or other special lenses is even more difficult.

Luckily, the eyes should adapt within a few days and will pass quickly the more you wear the new glasses. Taking them off or switching back to an old pair provides temporary relief but will make the pain worse and longer-lasting. If the headaches last longer than a week or two, it can be due to binocular vision dysfunction. In this condition, the eyes are slightly misaligned.

2. Frames Don’t Fit

The glasses’ frames hold the lenses steady at the right distance from the eyes. If they’re loose, the glasses can slide down. This problem can change your focal length, forcing the visual organs to readjust constantly. In contrast, tight frames put constant pressure on your face and temples. Fortunately, you can have their fit adjusted.

3. Prescription Requires Adjustment

The lenses should be constructed based on your most recent visit to the optometrist. An old or incorrect prescription can result in parts that hurt rather than help.

To determine whether the problem is with the lenses, check whether the frames fit and wait for a few weeks. If the headaches persist, you may need additional testing to fine-tune your prescription.
