Seen as cloudy spots on the lens of the eye, cataracts are something that many people end up developing as they get older. They're caused when proteins in the eye break down and clump together, leading to cloudy spots and blurry vision. However, although they do commonly develop because of age, as any eye doctor will tell you, you can still make lifestyle changes to minimize the chances of it happening.

How to Mitigate the Development of Cataracts

1. Wear Sunglasses

Excessive direct exposure to ultraviolet rays is generally harmful to your eye health and eyesight, and cataracts are no exception. If you aren't already, you should wear sunglasses specifically paired with a coating that blocks ultraviolet rays.

Unfortunately, not all sunglasses have this coating; some simply have darker lenses. When in doubt, head to your local eye doctor for a pair.

2. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods

Generally, fruits and vegetables are great for healthy eyes. Asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and spinach have numerous vitamins that have been proven beneficial.

Adding foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, strawberries, and grapefruit to your diet is also good. Lutein-rich foods like eggs, kale, and tomatoes should also be incorporated.

3. Cut Back on Alcohol

While the previous point is about what you should add to your diet, there are some foods your eye doctor will prefer you start decreasing. Excess alcohol has been shown to lead to various health issues, including increased cataract growth.

Whenever possible, replace an alcoholic drink with something more hydrating, whether water or tea. Staying hydrated will help your eyes retain moisture and stay healthy.

Of course, routine appointments are also critically beneficial, and if you need to book one, contact West Valley Vision Center.
