However, how you handle yourself during this initial meeting can make or break your chances for job consideration. Below is a helpful list of do’s and don’ts to ensure you put your best foot forward during your next interview.

Do:

Research the company.

One of the worst mistakes young professionals can make is neglecting to research the company they’re applying to work for. Take the time to scour their website and write down any questions you have. Follow their social media accounts and consider the topics they post about. Armed with this background information, you’ll be able to speak knowledgeably and showcase what you have to bring to the table.

Highlight your successes.

Come prepared with specific examples of how you were instrumental in moving the needle for previous employers. When possible, include measurables like numbers related to sales, staff retention, and funding and fundraising. Reflect on several specific challenges you faced at work and how you overcame them.

Don’t:

Be negative.

Employee morale and company culture can easily turn sour with the addition of a negative and challenging teammate. Always be positive and upbeat during an interview. Even when discussing a previous challenge or personal hardship, young professionals should never put themselves down; instead, end each thought on a positive note. The interaction is critical in showcasing your ability to bring a good attitude to work.

Be Late.

Another big interview faux pas is showing up late; a potential employer will note the tardiness as disregard for their time and energy. It also raises a red flag about your reliability, which hurts your chances of securing the job. To make a good impression, arrive 10-15 minutes early. Doing so gives the interviewer time to prepare for the meeting and you a chance to collect your thoughts in the company’s waiting area.
