If you recently graduated from college or entered the workforce for the first time, your goal may be to land a job. You’ll likely schedule several interviews before finding the right fit for you. It’s crucial to impress potential employers, so preparation before an interview is key to doing so. Below are several tips every young professional should follow for a successful interview.

5 Items to Bring to Every Job Interview

1. Your Resume

You probably already submitted your resume in order to land the interview, but it’s wise to always bring physical copies to your interview just in case. Try to bring at least five copies in case you end up meeting multiple people.

2. References

Your interviewer may ask to contact people you’ve worked with in the past or anyone who is familiar with your work habits. Come prepared with a list of a few references, including former bosses, coworkers, teachers, or young professionals in your community who you’ve assisted with charitable projects.

3. Portfolio

young professionalsEven if it’s not required, bring work samples with you to the interview. This is especially important for young professionals entering creative fields because it demonstrates an ability to complete the sort of projects the potential employer may be looking for.

4. Notepad & Pencil

It’s beneficial to take notes during and after your interview. Write down names, the job description, and any pertinent information your interviewer may give you during your discussion. These insights can help you decide whether that position is right for you afterward.

5. Questions

It’s crucial to convey to your interviewer how interested you are in the position and their company. Usually, they’ll ask if you have any questions for them at the end of the interview, so come prepared with a list. Don’t just ask about vacation days or sick days. Research the company and come up with thoughtful questions to ask, including if there is room for improvement or what types of projects they’re working on.
