By June, summer temperatures are present in North Carolina. Temperatures are rising, and rain showers are less frequent this time of year, so it's important to look out for the health of your lawn. To help in this process, discover below a few lawn maintenance tips for the month of June.

A Lawn Maintenance Guide for June

1. Keep an Eye on Rainfall Amounts

The majority of lawns in the area need one inch of water per week to stay nourished and healthy. If you notice signs of stress on your lawn, like bare or brown spots, weeds, curling blades of grass, or color changes, increase the weekly watering amount to one-and-a-half to two inches.

At the same time, be sure to monitor rainfall amounts so you don't overwater the lawn. Invest in a rain gauge and follow the local weather reports to measure how much moisture your lawn is getting, and adjust watering levels accordingly.

2. Be Ready to Combat Brown Patch Fungus

The month of June comes with higher heat and humidity levels, which makes it an ideal time of year for brown patch fungus to flourish. Brown patch fungus develops when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and it feeds on the added moisture in the air and on the ground to overtake your lawn. Look for its telltale brown patches, and, at the first sign, contact a lawn spraying service to treat your yard with a fungicide.

3. Water In the Early Morning

Aim to water the lawn between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. At this time of day, it is cooler and winds are calmer, which helps the soil and grass roots absorb moisture.

There is also less risk of lawn disease since any water that remains on the grass will evaporate faster in the early morning, preventing an oversaturation that can be harmful to your lawn. If early-morning lawn maintenance isn't conducive to your schedule, consider using a sprinkler system with a built-in clock and timer.
