The start of a new year is often viewed as a time of rejuvenation and renewal. Despite this, many people tend to overlook lawn maintenance while their property is experiencing winter temperatures. However, there are steps you can take to promote healthy landscaping and get your yard ready for the spring growing season. Here are a few ways to do that.

New Year’s Lawn Maintenance Tips

1. Apply Lime

The lime will help keep the balance of the ph in soil. If the weather becomes a problem, we will be out as soon as the weather permits. The lime takes time to work itself into the soil for the proper pH balance. Therefore, there’s no reason for urgency, like some of the other treatments that we do (fungicide, aeration, etc.). That’s why we do it now when we are the least busy.

2.  Get a soil sample

The pH level must be at a certain level for the fertilizers to work properly, especially in tall fescue lawns. The pH range is between 5.5 and 7 for optimum balance. The only way to know if you have the right balance of pH, phosphorus and potassium in your soil, is to get a soil sample. The soil sample needs to be checked every two years and the results help determine what your soil needs for your turf. It’s a simple and inexpensive process. You can contact your local Cooperative Extension Office and they can get the process going for you. From what I’ve gathered from others, they have been very helpful. If you need any further information on this subject, just let me know and I’ll be happy to guide you through it.

3. Winter Cleanup

The month of January is typically cold, so there’s not a lot of activity on your lawn. One of the things you can do is keep the leaves removed as that can damage the fescue. Allowing leaves and other organic matter to remain in place can lead to fungal growth in your lawn. Winter weather can bring down dead branches or cause dead leaves to accumulate in different parts of the yard. The start of the year is a good time to clean up this debris.
