Braces require some lifestyle modifications to prevent damage, but they’re well worth the effort. A year or so down the road, they’ll reveal a uniform, aligned smile. If your teen has recently received their set, here are some steps they can take to preserve them.

How to Care for New Braces

1. Brush Gently

Your teen should continue to brush their teeth after their braces have been placed. In fact, it may be advised that they brush after every meal to remove food particles that could otherwise linger in the metal fixtures and cause cavities. Have your teen rinse first to remove any large food pieces. Then, have them use a soft-bristled brush at an angle to gently brush the teeth. Make sure they get the areas on the tops and bottoms of the brackets.

2. Floss Daily

Flossing may seem impossible to your teen after they first receive their braces. Yet, it’s still just as important as ever to keep food away from the spaces between teeth and along the gum line. Leaving food particles behind could put them at a greater risk for decay, since they could get trapped by the wires or brackets. Have your teen use floss picks in lieu of traditional string floss, as it may be easier for them to maneuver between the wires. You could also have them use an oral irrigator, which uses pressurized water to wash away food.

3. Avoid Damaging Foods

Encourage your teen to avoid any foods that are hard, sticky, or likely to get caught between the teeth and metal. While the orthodontist’s office may provide a list of what to avoid, in general, you’ll want to avoid popcorn, hard candies, gum, especially fibrous fruits or vegetables, and nuts. It’s also advised that your teen avoids heavily pigmented substances, such as soda. Drinking too many dark beverages while wearing braces could stain the areas of the teeth that are exposed, creating inconsistent coloring after they’re removed.
