Seeing a dentist might not seem like an immediate “to-do” when you’re pregnant, but it is nevertheless important. The dental professional identifies any oral health issues that need attention, which can include an infected tooth requiring a root canal. Learn more about root canals and pregnancy here, including when to schedule one.

What Are Some Common Concerns?

It is normal to feel apprehensive about undergoing a root canal or any other procedure while pregnant. Dental x-rays, anesthesia, and the chemicals used during the procedure can cause concern. However, there are few to no risks involved.

The lead aprons used during x-rays protect both you and the fetus, and there are no dangers associated with root canal cleaning and disinfecting chemicals. In terms of anesthesia, you can usually pick whether you want conscious or unconscious sedation to ease related worries.

What Are the Risks of Delaying the Procedure?

Delaying a root canal and allowing a badly infected tooth to remain untreated is the riskier choice, as the infection can spread to the rest of the body. Symptoms of a spreading tooth infection include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, fever, skin flushing, and chills. The infection can also cause facial swelling, confusion, chest pain, seizures, and breathing difficulties, among other serious symptoms requiring immediate medical attention.

When Is the Best Time to Make an Appointment?

Scheduling a root canal prevents the infection from worsening and putting you and your unborn child at risk. The right time to schedule the procedure is during the second trimester, as the chance of complications lessens and you can still sit in the dental chair comfortably.

The first trimester is when the embryo transitions into a fetus, during which development complications can arise. The third trimester is generally considered the least comfortable due to fetal size and weight.

For these reasons, undergoing dental work in your second trimester is highly recommended. Talk to your dentist about the optimal time to schedule the procedure in light of your current dental health and where you are in your pregnancy.
