Alongside brushing your teeth twice daily, dentists recommend flossing once a day for optimal dental health. Flossing removes plaque between your teeth and the gum line, which are areas a toothbrush can't reach. However, it's important to do it correctly to reap the benefits of this oral hygiene practice. Here are some do's and don'ts to consider.

Do:

Use enough floss.

Dentists advise using at least 18 inches of floss for effective plaque removal. Using the same section of floss as you move along each tooth can reintroduce plaque and bacteria to your teeth and lead to other dental problems. For optimal cleaning, start with a fresh strip for each tooth, wrapping it in a tight C-shape around each tooth as you move along, ensuring it reaches below the gumline.

Be gentle.

Work slowly and gently when flossing, guiding the strip back and forth between your teeth using light pressure. Snapping the floss or forcing it between your teeth can damage your gums, increasing your risk of infection. If you notice soreness, recession, or irritation of your gums, you may be flossing too vigorously.

Don't:

Stop if you see bleeding.

Your gums may be tender when you first start flossing, which could result in some bleeding.  Continue your regimen as per by your dentist, and the bleeding should stop in one or two weeks as your gums become healthier.

However, if bleeding worsens or becomes excessive, consult your dentist for an evaluation. They can assess the underlying cause of the bleeding and recommend appropriate treatment.

Rely on replacements.

Using mouthwash and brushing your teeth are important parts of good oral hygiene, but they should not be a substitute for flossing. While mouthwash can help freshen your breath and kill bacteria, it can't remove plaque buildup between your teeth and the gum line. Flossing can remove plaque in these hard-to-reach areas, helping minimize the risk of dental problems.
