Dry socket is a condition that occurs after a tooth is extracted and the socket’s protective blood clot is dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. This condition delays healing, increases the risk of infection, and leads to scarring, which is especially problematic if you want a dental implant to replace the tooth. Fortunately, you can avoid this issue with a few post-operative care tips following a tooth extraction.

How to Avoid Dry Socket

1. Don’t Use Tobacco

Wait at least a full two days after your procedure before using a tobacco product. Pulling on a cigarette or vape applies suction to the socket where the tooth was removed, which will cause the clot to dislodge. Chewing tobacco will also disturb the clot. Additionally, both forms of tobacco introduce chemical irritants and bacteria to the surgical site, increasing the risk of infection.

2. Watch What You Eat

Drink only water for several days after the tooth extraction, and don’t drink through a straw, as the suction will affect the clot. When you begin eating after your procedure, stick with liquid and soft foods, and try not to chew on that side of your mouth. Hard, crunchy, and sticky foods will break the clot loose and potentially damage the surgical site.

3. Take Time Off

Rest for at least two days after the tooth extraction, and when you resume normal activity, take it easy. Avoid contact sports or being jostled, as the impact could knock the clot loose. If it does come loose, contact your dentist right away for recommended action.
