With the arrival of cooler temperatures, you'll likely be grilling out less often. Storing your propane grill for winter will protect the device and fuel and ensure they are ready to use again come spring. Below, discover a few tips for storing your grill this fall.

How to Store a Propane Grill for Fall

1. Clean It

Perform a thorough end-of-season cleaning to remove stains, debris, and food scraps that have accumulated over the summer. If you store a grill while it's dirty, the grime will only set in further, which can lead to rust and contamination of the internal components, not to mention messes that will be difficult to remove in spring. For best results, use a grill brush to remove any lingering food debris and wipe the exterior down with a cloth and gentle cleanser.

2. Spray the Burners & Other Metal Parts With Oil

Apply a thin coat of cooking oil spray to the burners and other visible metal parts of the grill. This will provide a moisture barrier and help prevent corrosion. Then, wrap the burner element in a plastic bag to prevent insects from getting in and nesting in the gas tubes while the grill is sitting unused.

3. Cover the Grill

A cover will provide shelter from any damaging winter weather, as well as some insulation from the cold. If you have the space, move the grill into a garage, shed, or under a roof overhang against the side of the house. If you want to keep the grill outdoors this winter, invest in a grill cover. Make sure the cover fits securely around the entire grill and propane tank. This will prevent moisture and rust, and it will help keep rodents and wildlife out. Regardless of where you store the grill, the propane tank should always be turned off to keep everyone safe.
