Throughout the winter months, you'll rely more on your furnace to make sure your home stays comfortable. While this will undoubtedly keep your home warm and cozy, it can also mean that you'll need to order more propane to get through the season. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to use less propane without sacrificing your comfort. Here are several tips to get you started.

How to Use Less Propane This Winter

1. Take Advantage of the Sun

The sun offers a free source of heat every day. Keep your window treatments open during daylight hours to allow as much sunlight in as possible, especially those on east-facing windows in the early morning and west-facing ones later in the afternoon. However, as soon as the sun goes down, close the window treatments; this will help trap the heat indoors and keep your home warmer throughout the early evening and overnight.

2. Seal Doors & Windows

Gaps around your window and door frames can let in cool drafts that drain your heating system. To avoid this energy loss, check that the weatherstripping or other sealant around your doors and windows is strong, secure, and free of damage. If not, replace it as necessary to create a secure seal. You may also consider applying clear plastic film over your windows to better retain heat inside the home. The plastic is an ideal insulator and will not compromise the views from your windows.

3. Switch the Direction of Ceiling Fans

Although it seems counterintuitive, your home's ceiling fans can offer valuable energy savings year-round. In the summer, ceiling fan blades should turn counterclockwise to draw warm air up and away from the room. Then, in the winter, you can keep using your ceiling fans as long as you switch them to clockwise mode. This pulls the warm air downward and distributes it throughout the room, making the space warmer. You should keep the speed set to the lowest setting to prevent cool drafts, though.
