Now that spring has finally arrived, many people are looking forward to getting their propane grills ready for use on the bright, sunny days ahead. However, if your grill has been out of use for several months, it will need some basic maintenance and preparation before it can be used. Here’s what you can do to make your grill ready for the warm weather to come.

How to Prepare Your Grill for the Spring

1. Check for Leaks

Rubber hoses, gaskets, and other fittings can become corroded or damaged when exposed to cold air. As a result, items that were serviceable before the winter may have broken down over months of inactivity and should be inspected prior to use.

Mix a small amount of dish soap with water and spread the solution on all hoses, valves, and the regulator. Then, you can open up your propane tank slightly and look for any bubbles. Tighten the connections to any elements showing evidence of leakage. If the problem persists, the leak is permanent, and the affected component should be replaced.

2. Clean It

Months of inactivity can also allow dust and grime to build up on the surface of your grill. Once you've inspected it, you'll want to clean the whole system using a rag, soft wire brush, and a mixture of mild soap and water. Remove the grates and soak them overnight in vinegar and water to break up stubborn rust. Then, you can scrub the inside of the grill and wipe any dust or dirt off the exterior. Finally, wipe down the burners and empty the grease trap. You should also line the grease trap with aluminum foil for easier cleaning in the months to come and hand-wash your grill tools.

3. Test Before Using

If you're planning to cook for a party or outdoor gathering, you need your grill to work smoothly. Before your first cook-out of the season, test your grill by igniting all the burners and letting them run for several minutes. Then, try preparing a few dishes using every burner to get an idea of how well they’re working. If you notice any leaks or improper burning, try readjusting and tightening the fittings or placing pieces of lava rock around the burners to absorb excess heat.
