Propane is an efficient fuel source used for a variety of functions on your property. There are different grades of propane in the United States that are utilized in specific instances. Below is a guide to the different grades and their characteristics.

HD5 Propane

Considered consumer-grade propane, HD5 is the highest grade available, and it is usually what gas delivery companies will sell and deliver to their customers. The grading designation means the gas has a minimum of 90% propane, 5% propylene, and a mix of iso-butane, methane, and other gases for the remaining percentage. HD5 grade also accounts for allowable amounts of each component, meaning that pure propane at 100% through 90% propane (and anything in between) is considered HD5.

HD5 is recommended for anything from cooking and heating a home to engine fuel for vehicles. Since it is pure or close to pure, the flame will burn hotter and longer than lower grades, making it a more efficient and cleaner fuel when in use. This makes it ideal for homes, specifically for keeping heating costs down and ensuring an environmentally friendly house.

When it comes to powering engines and machinery, HD5 propane releases fewer emissions. Propane fuel systems are also sealed, meaning less fuel will evaporate while in use or during refueling, and its low flammability rate makes it safer than gasoline. HD5 is also the purest grade of propane, and there’s no higher quality beyond it.

HD10 Propane

propaneHD10 is a lower grade since it allows up to 10% propylene, a material that is used in plastics and can cause sticking when utilized in certain engine processes. However, it can be used for household appliances like heating systems and for cooking and grilling, but it will not burn as efficiently or as cleanly as HD5. Industrial and commercial companies may use it for appliances like ovens and heaters, but it is not recommended for equipment such as forklifts and other vehicles containing engines that need fuel since the propane could stick to components, eventually causing friction and overheating.

HD10 is frequently used interchangeably with commercial-grade propane, specifically for functions that don’t rely on engines. Machinery used in oil and other fuel refineries can safely use HD10 or commercial grade without issue. Additionally, HD10 grade is mainly found in California and may not be available in every location. It is the only state that allows this grade of propane to be used more widely for both homes and businesses, which is usually due to the tax incentives the state provides if propane is used as an alternative fuel source.
